New Show Chronicles Teenage Pregnancy

Published by xzchief at 11:38 pm under Media Edit This

Seems I mentioned that the deal between Fiat and Chrysler was temporarily blocked just before the full Supreme Court summarily lifted the stay and let a lower-court ruling stand. The brief decision said that the petitioning consumer groups and pension funds owners hadn’t proven that the lower court’s decision was wrong or that a Supreme Court would overturn the ruling. Therefore, there are two U.S. automakers now.

I heard the other day that two of my friends are expecting a baby. Things are quite early so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for them. The pregnancy was planned and both expecting parents are thrilled. So are their loved ones. I couldn’t be happier for them and I wish them the best.

In contrast, MTV debuted a show tonight entitled 16 and Pregnant. My friends have steady jobs, are well out of college and have a house. On the other hand, the episode’s parents-to-be and their relatives were not happy about the situation. I think a key difference was that the kids portrayed are 16. Not able in any way to care for a child.

The point of the series is to offer a less glamorous side of teen pregnancy. Poor Bentley. To be born to Maci, who admits the job is harder than she expected, and Ryan, who admits he wouldn’t be with his fiance any more were Bentley not there. Both Maci and Ryan’s parents were supportive. However, that can only go so far. They don’t want to raise their grandchild nor should they be expected to do so in this case. I hope for the best for them but I’m not encouraged. The numbers are not with them.

Teenage pregnancy statistics are staggering. Everyone agrees the issue is critically important. Everyone knows something needs to be done.

However, deciding what to do is hard because decision making involves philosophy. As I’ve said previously, philosophy cannot be easily discarded. If one is able to jettison his morals when doing so suits him, there is his philosophy.

So do you think this show is a good idea or a bad idea? It claims it aims to show the less-desirable side of teen pregnancy, while at the same time bringing national fame and glamor to those involved the way only MTV can.
