Obama to Speak in Cairo

Published by xzchief at 11:20 pm under Government Edit This

A few hours from now, President Obama will make his long-awaited speech in Cairo, Egypt. He is expected to address how the U.S. and the Arab states can peacefully co-exist in the future.

Pundits are debating whether Obama is planning to abandon Israel, one of America’s staunchest allies for 60 years. There is some support for a two-state solution where Palestine and Israel would each have homelands.

However, the spector of Iran working on nuclear weapons casts a pale on the region. Furthermore, the U.S.’s dependence on Arab oil restricts Obama from pressing for human rights as much as he might like. Political opponents at home think the president will cater too much to the Middle East during his speech and not support his country enough.

I think it’s a very common misconception that Obama would have to “not stand up for” his own country in order to support or say nice things about Arab nations. Several of them have been our allies for years, despite our involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Remember, Obama is the President of the U.S., not Isreal.
