Cinco de Mayo Comes to Puebla
In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo is best known as an excuse to wear sombreros, eat tacos and drink margueritas. However, May 5 is better known in Puebla, Mexico for the famous battle that took place on that date in 1862.
The Mexicans defeated the French despite being outnumbered two-to-one. The French army hadn’t lost a battle since Napoleon was leading it. The French left Mexico and no country has invaded North America since.
The state of Puebla will enjoy a holiday Wednesday. Some other parts of Mexico celebrate Cinco de Mayo as well although Sept. 16 is the nation’s day of independence.
