No Prosecution Over Torture
Attorney General Eric Holder said today he won’t prosecute anyone involved with torturing accused terrorists at Guantanamo Bay. Lots of liberals are upset.
They surely remember what happened to then-President Clinton when he was embroiled in scandal with Monica Lewinsky. I’m sure opponents of the Bush administration want officials to go through as much as public scruntiny as Bill Clinton received.
Holder seems to be following the Watergate model instead. Gerald Ford chose to pardon Richard Nixon for his role in Watergate after being inundated with questions about the topic during his first weeks in office.
Ford correctly said that there’d be no room for any other subjects as long as prosecuting the disgraced former president was still a possibility. So he ended what he called “the long national nightmare” by pardoning Nixon.
From there, Ford hoped to heal the country. Things didn’t go as planned but surely a federal corruption trial of Nixon in 1975, for instance, would have been as much–even in the pre-Internet, pre-cable news days–of a circus as was the Clinton impeachment hearing.

WOW chief so you have to be a liberal to be upset over torturing people who haven’t even been charged with a crime? And Ford was right to pardon Nixon? Just maybe a “conservative” could think torturing people who aren’t even charged with a crime is a bad idea. Just maybe Nixon was a criminal and deserved to be prosecuted. You give me the impression that for you all issues are partisan issues and there is no such thing as objective analysis. And you actually compared Clinton getting a BJ to torturing people, that’s amazing.
I agree with dsent on this one (WOW-hah buddy). I find it very hard to equate torturing human beings with getting a hummer in the White house. As far as Nixon is concerned; his bigggest crime was covering up a break-in that actually didn’t accomplish a thing. The fact that he completely lost his mind as a result was punishment enough. Bush, Cheney, and that piece of shit Rumsfeld should be held accountable for the permanent damage they did to many innocent people. After all; it was Rumsfeld who gave the OK to the Pentagon to use these tactics.
I just get the “warm fuzzys” when I hear Rumsfeld called a “piece of shit”…nice
