Obama Returns from Europe
I’m glad that President Obama seemed to be generally well-received during his first European trip since taking office. Convincing other nations to follow our lead will be easier if Obama is likable. Do you like to follow someone you hate?
That said, perhaps the reason the president is so popular abroad is because he’s more amenable to foreign ideas. George W. Bush saw the world in black or white terms. That’s how I usually see things.
However, “my way or the highway” isn’t the best diplomatic approach. President Obama seems to see more gray.
Dick Morris, Bill Clinton’s former adviser, wrote a column the other day in which he contends Obama undercut American sovereignty in order to create a stronger multinational oversight board. Morris believes the Declaration of Independence was rendered meaningless since the newly-revised financial board will be able to use vague guidelines to impose its will on any company it thinks could help trigger another global economic crisis.
Morris thinks continental Europe wants to replace American and British capitalism with French socialism. Thereby, Europe won’t seem like it’s economically stagnant in comparison. The idea seems a bit too much like a conspiracy theory for me. I would, however, expect American leaders to demand that American sovereignty not be sacrificed for a “new world order.”

Dick Morris is an idiot. The Declaration of Independence is not a governing document. As for our giving up our independence via an international finance board, if Morris knew anything he’d know that multinational companies, particularly in finance, coordinate their actions for mutual benefit all the time. Heaven forfend that representatives of the people get to benefit from some of the same coordination.
