Make Sure Us Can Beat Them; EntreCard Contest Starts Tomorrow

Published by xzchief at 11:59 pm under Chaney's Rules Edit This

My Twentieth Rule of Media Relations is The media thrives on conflict. “If it bleeds, it leads,” is the mantra. Establish us vs. them dichotomies and make sure “Us” is always bigger than “Them.”

The sun rising each day is the biggest miracle I know. However, I only see an almanac item indicating when the sun will rise and set in my newspaper. Not much fanfare.

No, instead the media reports on unusual things. People getting along, paying their bills and managing to live without causing problems isn’t very newsworthy. Crime, celebrity, misadventures and death are much easier to market to the public.

You’ve heard about the stimulus package being developed in Washington. President Obama and his supporters are talking about the tax credits that will go to working families. Opponents are decrying the welfare checks that will be handed to people who don’t pay taxes.

Political victories require a majority. Most people would rather be considered a hard-working soul who could use a little help during tough economic times. Much worse to be labeled a lazy slob living off others. Framing a debate to suit your purpose is a key way to win public support.

On another note, I’ll be announcing an EntreCard contest Sunday. I’m offering 50,000 credits among nine people and I’m looking for sponsors to build the prize fund further.
