On Dueling Logs and Top Droppers
You know you’re onto something when others want to copy your idea. Politicians are like that. For instance, three television channels are broadcasting The Yule Log in Los Angeles this morning.
WGN America aired the program nationally with a twist last night. Instead of holiday music, one could hear old-time radio shows. Programs featuring Jack Benny and Orson Welles were among the shows heard.
WGN is now airing the standard Yule Log, as are KTLA and KCAL in Los Angeles. Each local station is simulcasting a radio station’s all-Christmas music format.
Your city probably has one or two radio stations that, like many retailers, began hyping Christmas well before Thanksgiving. KOST is L.A.’s station, for example. WLIT is Chicago’s Christmas music outlet. The format must be doing well to continue operating each year.
I talk about the media so much because the only way you’re probably going to know about politics is through the media. Most of us will never meet national elected leaders or their staff members personally. For that matter, most of us haven’t met our city council members or other local elected officials.
How we understand politics is affected by our understanding of the media. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve developed Chaney’s Rules of Media Relations. The list has grown to 29 ruies. I’ll spend January writing about one rule per day.
I want to thank Politics 2000’s top ten EntreCard droppers for December. In particular, Bingo Games and Women Community, BMWF1Blog, and Brick For Jade deserve recognition for being on the top ten for both Politics 2000 and Sports 2000. Your visits and comments are very much appreciated. May you have a wonderful 2009.
