Mumbai Attacks Highlight Terrorist Threats
Talk in the U.S. this year has focused around economic issues. Barack Obama has been quickly building his staff of financial advisers. Beside the possibility of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, little has been done to fill his foreign policy staff.
The terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India Wednesday demonstrate that security will have to be of critical important also. More than 100 people were killed and about 200 others were injured in 10 coordinated attacks today. Hostages were taken at several locations although many of them has since been released. The Taj Mahal Hotel is on fire.
Both Obama and George W. Bush have denounced the attacks. Indian police say they’ve arrested nine people so far. A small terrorist group is taking credit. Today’s actions will likely spark another round of animosity between India and Pakistan. Bush–and in two months, Obama–will need to help stabilize the region. Who the incoming president chooses to help him accomplish this task will say a lot about his administration.
