As Debate Looms, California Requests Bailout
California is Constitutionally required to pass a balanced budget by June 30 each year. I might as well say there’s a legal requirement to find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Neither is likely to happen. The 2008-09 budget was passed recently–nearly three months late–and has a seven-billion dollar shortfall.
Therefore, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger went to Washington last week and requested a Wall Street-style bailout for his state. The governor is a Republican but he should hope Sen. Barack Obama wins the presidency since California has been blue the last four elections. All polls indicate another easy Democratic win next month.
Speaking of easy Democratic wins, Sen. John McCain abandoned his campaign in Michigan last week. The move is surprising only because it was surprising McCain ever thought he’d win the state. Michigan has gone blue four straight times. McCain was soundly beaten in the Republican primary by Mitt Romney. Granted, the Democratic primary couldn’t have been handled worse but fences have been mended.
Polls are showing Obama is extending his lead. McCain must do well at Tuesday’s debate. Stopping Obama’s momentum is paramount but won’t be enough. Status quo for four weeks means Obama will win. McCain must reverse the trends, starting tomorrow.

Four straight weeks of character attacks and smears without talking about the issues aren’t going to win him any more votes. His rallies, and certainly Palin’s, are becoming near race riots, and open hostility towards people of color, the media, and mostly Obama are chuckled at by the candidates.
